The Maker’s Tale
Moss & Mortar Mercantile was born from a deep connection to plants, traditional medicine, and the art of making by hand. What began as a study of herbalism has grown into a practice that blends botanical remedies with thoughtfully crafted goods.
Rooted in both science and intuition, each product is made with intention; from herbal salves and balms to hand sewn textiles and garments. Sewing became a natural extension of this work, carrying the same care and purpose into pieces meant to be worn, used, and lived in.
My name is Jurnie, and my path into herbalism began with a fascination: that much of modern medicine originates from plants - leaves, roots, and remedies once prepared by hand. Living with chronic illness led me to seek out this slower, more intentional form of healing.
I grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, surrounded by desert plants often overlooked, yet rich in resilience and quiet medicine. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, I deepened my studies in horticulture, learning to propagate and graft plants, and later pursued herbalism through the American College of Healthcare Sciences. These landscapes, so different yet equally abundant, continue to shape my understanding of healing.
Moss & Mortar reflects both the science and spirit of traditional craft. Each piece, whether botanical or textile, is created with research, reverence, and a deep respect for the natural world.
I honor the lineage of those who came before us: herbalists, apothecaries, seamstresses, and makers, whose knowledge was built through experience, experimentation, and care. Their work laid the foundation for both modern medicine and traditional craft, and it is through them that this practice continues.
